An unexpected hobby helped my weight

it was a crazy one!

Spring is coming!

I’ll be emailing you throughout the year, checking in, often talking about “Good Day Strategies” to help with weight loss and maintenance, but if this is bugging you, be sure to unsubscribe.

What are you doing on your “good days” to make your future “bad days” just a little bit easier?

I call these “Good Day Strategies” and I have employed them over twenty years. They have been key to my weight struggles.

On one good day about fifteen years ago, my mom and I harvested a giant carload of spring time edible greens, out in the wild. It was such a crazy haul and we had no actual plan for it.

We wondered: “What could we do to use this MOUNTAIN of greens?”

That was the beginning of our “greens soups” from wild greens. I made one here on YouTube just a few years ago, adapting it to our eating model here at Eat Like a Bear. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-GrzEkdw-Q

That soup is a great, healthy meal, but that’s not my main point.

That day fifteen years ago kindled my interest in wild greens, an interest I cultivated. It became part of a growing hobby that was the perfect “Good Day Strategy” for me.

On good days, I learned about new plants and went out on the hunt for them. On bad days, I could forage for them too, I was just far less likely to seek out new plants or new recipes.

The product of all of it — the soup — gave me the benefit of nutrition. My hobby of foraging was a “win” in multiple ways.

Are you cultivating a hobby to fill your mind and your heart every day?

We all need to find something to add value to our lives — something that doesn’t cultivate over-eating.

Over the years, I have knitted, crocheted, researched genealogy. I have made lotions, salves, and balms. I have gardened, hiked, built trails, and distilled herbs.

There is a whole world out there that can help us make good decisions every single day, but we need to cultivate it with intention. That’s your key assignment on good days.

Spring is coming across North America. It’s time to get out there any way we can.
