Is that CHOCOLATE in my house?

on we sugar addicts...

In partnership with

Who here likes sweets???

Raises hand….

(We all raise our hands….)

It feels straight-up impossible to lose weight and then to maintain it — the allure of sweets is constant. Comfort food is all around us.

We get comments from community members all the time of how difficult all of this is for them because of their unusually high level of addiction to sugar. In some cases, they have given up because the problem just seems too big. They feel like they will never be free of the hold that sugar has on them.

Here’s how I see it: Some of us have more success with weight loss and maintenance not because we don’t love sweets but because we’re further on the path of recovery.

An important early step on that path is recognizing that you do have control over the situation. It can just take some time and focus.

The Chocolate Bar

So what’s the chocolate bar story?

I left half a chocolate bar in the freezer of our apartment by accident recently. I was then 90 minutes away for a few nights.

There are a couple extraordinary points here:

(1) I ate only half the bar initially. (My prior self is eating the whole bar and more.)

(2) I FORGOT to pack the chocolate.

WHAT???

My chocolate bar is evidence that we can reduce “food noise” naturally. Food noise is that voice in our head that keeps whispering to us that there is chocolate in the freezer. It’s what the weight loss medications are helping to curb. I have curbed it naturally over these years and so can you.

It takes some time and focus.

In the Deep Den Content Library (which is in our paid member area), there is a video series about changing our “value” for food: Elevating other activities in life over eating. Reducing the role of food to nourishment and occasional entertainment. It is a topic we discuss often and actively in the Deep Den because it is, in fact, the biggest barrier most of us have.

You can begin on your path to combatting food noise by simply recognizing that it is a problem, that you are not alone, and that there is a path out there. The path is highly individualized but it is there and it’s for keeps.

Start with this: Identify the biggest thing causing you to eat too much. Just one thing.

Stop buying it completely.

It may require going to a whole new grocery store or taking a different driving route somewhere. Structure your life to stop buying it. Remove it from your life. Over time, you will value it less and less.

Then do it with something else.

This is a long game and you must learn to become an expert player.

I am still learning myself…

I did eat the other half of that bar. I wonder if a few years from now I won’t even care about chocolate. It seems a bit sad to give things up, but boy, what we can gain in the process…

In Front of Massive Change

Yes, I have mixed feelings about the AI revolution too and am definitely concerned about it’s potential directions.

However, I also feel pretty strongly that we need to learn about it and possibly integrate parts of it just to remain relevant in our work. These times are not like our parents’ times in the 90s where they could ignore the emerging internet and squeak by. Changes are coming rapidly and we need to know what to expect.
